Pervasive across class, religion and ethnicity in Pakistan, Violence against Women (VAW) has a high social and economic cost. It is not only a moral and a social issue but also constitutes a major loss of productive labor in the economy, limits women’s participation in the development process and reduces their capacity to access resources and services.
The Government over the years has shown its commitment for the advancement of women’s rights and protection of women through various international and national commitments which include Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); Beijing +10; Millennium Development Goals; National Policy for Development and Empowerment of Women (NPDEW); National Plan for Action (NPA), and Gender Reform Action Plan (GRAP) among others.
Gender Justice and Protection (GJP) Project is a key initiative of the UNDP Pakistan, funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), with the aim to contribute to sustainable reduction in violence against women (VAW) in accordance with the government‘s policy commitments. The project has established a fund i.e. GJP Fund to support promising initiatives from government and civil society organizations (CSOs) to combat the prevalence of violence against women, abuse, discrimination and social exclusion.
