Description:
 

Background:

Ministry of Environment is implementing Phase-I of the UNDP-GEF & GoP funded project on “Sustainable Land Management to combat Desertification in Pakistan”. The overall goal of the project is to combat land degradation and desertification in Pakistan in order to protect and restore ecosystems and essential ecosystem services that are key to reducing poverty. The main objectives are to strengthen institutional capacity, create an enabling environment, and demonstrate good practices – all in an effort to help remove key barriers to Sustainable Land Management (SLM). The Project will facilitate implementation of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and NAP to Combat Desertification in Pakistan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Coordinator, Capacity Building and Training (CB&T) will actively plan, implement and coordinate activities related to the capacity building component of the Project. He/She will work under the direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator (NPC) and will closely collaborate with Provincial Project Coordinators (PPCs) and other thematic experts. He/she will ensure that project objectives, especially pertaining to his/her component are accomplished within prescribed timeframe.
 The specific tasks of the Coordinator, Capacity Building will include:
Take a lead role in identifying capacity development needs of the project partners;
Develop and implement a capacity building program tailored toward SLM of land resources;
Assist/collaborate with research institutions in designing targeted research activities for testing best SLM practices;
Organize training workshops and seminars on SLM, land use planning, rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems and integrated management of land resources;
Develop a training plan for the project partners and community representatives to build their capacity in promoting SLM and integrated management of land resources;
Collaborate with partner organizations and other relevant agencies for enhancing institutional capacity of the line agencies, district government staff, research institutions, NGOs, farmer groups and women organizations for tackling land degradation and desertification;
Design and implement a program for promoting public-private partnerships for addressing desertification issues;
Take a lead role in developing and implementing outreach and awareness raising strategy for the project;
Generate knowledge on SLM, including special studies on climate change impacts and early warning system and drought preparedness;
Provide guidance and supervise the work of communication officer in designing and implementing the project communication strategy;
Provide quarterly updates on implementation and progress made on the capacity building component of the project;
Assist and collaborate with the NPC, PPCs and other thematic experts for achieving overall project objectives;
Any other specific task as may be assigned by the National Project Director or NPC.
