Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in handling GIS and RS assignments;
Strong GIS & RS skills with complete command on two or more GIS packages like Arc GIS, 3D-Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Map Objects and ERDAS Imagine Professional;
Understanding/experience in developing web-based Information System;
Hands-on experience in data input, storage, management, analysis, transformation, and producing output and presentations.
Should have ability in taking initiatives, analytical thinking, and problem solving
Excellent communication skills both in verbal and written English.
Ministry of Environment is implementing Phase-I of the UNDP-GEF & GoP funded project on “Sustainable Land Management to combat Desertification in Pakistan”. The overall goal of the project is to combat land degradation and desertification in Pakistan in order to protect and restore ecosystems and essential ecosystem services that are key to reducing poverty. The main objectives are to strengthen institutional capacity, create an enabling environment, and demonstrate good practices – all in an effort to help remove key barriers to Sustainable Land Management (SLM). The Project will facilitate implementation of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and NAP to Combat Desertification in Pakistan.
Duties and Responsibilities
The GIS Specialist/Coordinator SLM Information System (SLMIS) will be responsible for establishing a Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Information System, including database on the extent of land degradation and desertification, mapping of socio-economic data, establishing baselines and GIS based land use planning at the pilot project sites. He/she will work under the direction and direct supervision of the National Project Coordinator and in close collaboration with Provincial Project Coordinators and Land Use Planning Expert.
He/she will be responsible for the following specific tasks and responsibilities:
Establish GIS/web-based SLM Information System for the project with spatial and numeric database (RDBMS)
Develop thematic maps and land cover database for creating land use maps.
Undertake analysis of environmental and socio-economic data of the pilot project sites
Establish baseline and develop site specific land use maps for the pilot project sites.
Gather data and establish networking with other organizations working on GIS based data management including PFI, WWF-Pakistan, WAPDA, Pakistan Met Department, SUPARCO, UN Agencies, Soil Survey of Pakistan, NARC, Research Institutions and Universities as well as private sector organizations;
Activity search topographic maps and satellite imageries of the pilot project districts.
Assist Land Use Planning Expert in mainstreaming SLM principles into land use planning;
Provide technical input in preparation of project documents, including project progress reports, special study reports, and advocacy material;
Assist the Project Team /consultants in producing quality outputs.
Procure, set-up, and maintain GIS equipment including software and hardware required for the land use planning and SLM Information system;
Assist the NPC in executing technical tasks including commenting on technical reports and designing of Phase-II of the Project;
Oversee development and maintenance of project website and discussion forum (server list).
Supervise technical staff assigned to the GIS Unit under the project.
Any other specific task as may be assigned by the National Project Director or National Project Coordinator.
