Experience:

At least 4-5 years of relevant experience with a donor funded project and familiarity with local environmental issues, particularly land degradation and desertification. Excellent communication (oral and written) and organizational skills. Strong computing skills, especially in MS word, excel, power point, MS Project and use of internet. Knowledge of UNDP and GoP procedures and policies will be an asset. Self-motivated and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Be able to complete tasks within strict and tight deadlines.

Description:
 

Background
 
Ministry of Environment is launching the first phase of a UNDP-GEF & GoP funded project on “Sustainable Land Management to combat Desertification in Pakistan”. The overall goal of the project is to combat land degradation and desertification in Pakistan in order to protect and restore ecosystems and essential ecosystem services that are key to reducing poverty. The main objectives are to strengthen institutional capacity, create an enabling environment, and demonstrate good practices – all in an effort to help remove key barriers to Sustainable Land Management (SLM).
 
Duties andResponsibilities
 
The project requires services of a Research Associate who could assist the Project in compilation, management and documentation of information related to sustainable management of land resources. He/she will work under the guidance of the National Project Coordinator (NPC) and provide technical backstopping to thematic experts.
 
Scope of work
 
The Research Associate will support the National Coordination Unit (NCU) by undertaking the following tasks:
 
-       Undertake research tasks such as locating, reviewing and synthesizing technical material related to various outputs of the SLMP;
-       Obtains, extract, and compile information on SLM from files, publications, internet search and other sources, on own initiative or as directed by the NPC;
-       Provide assistance in proof reading and editing technical reports/research publications;
-       Prepare information material for the SLMP website and coordinate flow of technical/research documents through the website;
-       Prepare correspondence and assist in distribution of advocacy and awareness material;
-       Write brief project news and prepare material for the project newsletter and other printing material;
-       Assist in writing articles/handouts/fact sheets related to the work of SLMP;
-       Assist the NPC in project coordination and monitoring by keeping track of the project workplan and reports;
-       Provide advanced word processing support by creating complex spreadsheets, maintaining databases and  creating high quality reports, presentations, and other documents;
-       Understand and assist in managing project outputs, activities, project controls and draft correspondence as and when required;
-       Assist in compiling and developing project workplans;
-       Assist NPC in coordinating all technical issues with the project partners and stakeholders;
-       Assist in coordinating meeting of the Project Steering Committee and Project Technical Committee, including preparation of agenda, invitations, and drafting minutes of the meetings;
-       Assist in organization of project workshop and seminars, including preparation of proceedings and short reports; and
-       Any other task assigned by the National Project Coordinator or Thematic Experts.
