Minimum of five (5) years in preparing quality publications, reports and stories preferably in areas related to development, humanitarian affairs, volunteering, civil society, relief and rehabilitation. Prior publication experience is a must. Substantive knowledge of volunteer involving organizations or volunteers is desirable.
Excellent, proven English writing skills, preferably human stories;
Sound judgment, excellent analytical skills, strong networking and interpersonal skills, ability to plan, organize and coordinate work and to cope with a demanding workload is expected;
Fluency in spoken English and Urdu; and
Excellent working knowledge of MS Office, desktop publishing skills desirable


1. Background:

United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism, including the mobilization of volunteers. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and in Pakistan, the National UNV scheme has started in January 2006 primarily as a response to the South Asia Earthquake on 8 October 2005. Till 25 April 2007, total 51 national UNV volunteers were deployed to 8 UN agencies, 4 government and 3 NGOs. In addition, total 14 international UNV volunteers came from 12 different countries in order to contribute relief and recovery process.

With following specific objectives, an international standard, visually attractive publication “United Nations Volunteers in the Earthquake Response” with stories from UNV volunteers worked for the earthquake response in Pakistan will be prepared. With limited human resource capacity at UNV unit in Pakistan, a service of a consultant is required to prepare this publication by 10 June 2007.

2. Objectives of the publication:

(1) To document and disseminate all the efforts made by both national and international UNV volunteers mobilized for the earthquake response, with particular attention to (a) why they decided to volunteer, (b) what they have achieved, delivered and contributed, (c) what was the added value being a volunteer or what kind of results they brought by promoting / advocating volunteerism, (e) what UNV volunteers supervisors and colleagues think about volunteers’ contributions (host agencies’ viewpoint), (f) what beneficiaries and earthquake affected people think about volunteers’ contribution (beneficiaries’ viewpoint)

(2) To raise awareness of UNV within Pakistan, as UNV is not yet well known in this country and “professionals serving as volunteers” is a new concept and not well understood

(3) To motivate qualified, mid-career professionals to apply for UNV assignments and to stimulate demand for national UNV volunteers from UN Agencies, Government and NGOs working for development, especially for achievement of Millennium Development Goals

3. Job summary:

Under the overall guidance of the UNDP Deputy Country Director – Programme and directly working with UNV Programme Officer, the consultant will:

• Prepare table of content of the publication for approval by UNDP/UNV
• Review relevant documents / stories available at UNDP/UNV
• Conduct individual interviews (by visit or telephone) and collect stories from currently serving or previously served UNV volunteers;
• Collect stories from previously served international UNV volunteers who have already repatriated by email;
• Take photographs of serving UNV volunteers in action (only whose photographs not taken by a professional photographer in November 2006)
• Conduct individual interviews (by visit or telephone) with supervisors and colleagues of host agencies (i.e. organizations where UNV volunteers are deployed) and with beneficiaries and earthquake affected population
• Based on the above, prepare a draft publication contents for review by UNDP/UNV
• Incorporate comments from UNDP/UNV and prepare the final publication contents ready for printing

4. Expected Outputs

Final publication contents ready for printing (in case a consultant does not have desktop publishing skill, proof-read MS Word file and selected photos with captions) by 10 June 2007

5. Remuneration / Application:

Based on National SSA arrangement, rate will depend on qualification and experience.
