Experience:

Minimum of five years of professional experience in psychological counseling with special emphasis on critical incident stress;
Additional training or experience in a broad range of related fields, such as alcohol/substance abuse, stress management, critical incident stress and cross-cultural communication would be an asset;
Demonstrated well-developed communication, leadership and team-building skills;Fluency in written and spoken English;
Working knowledge of local language(s);
Experience with the United Nations is desirable.
Certification or country-specific licensure authorizing the incumbent to deliver mental health services.


Description:
 

The primary role of the National Stress Counselor will be to develop a sustainable stress management system in the UN Offices operating in the country and to improve the critical incident stress management preparedness of the UN security system in cases of emergencies.

Responsibilities:

Under the administrative supervision of the Chief Security Adviser, to implement a wide range of stress management activities, including the UNDSS CISMU standard operational procedure on critical incident stress.

To develop and implement a stress management plan for the UN Offices in the country.

To perform an ongoing assessment and monitor the determinants of stress in the UN Offices, as well as stress levels among the UN staff;

To provide individual and group counseling sessions to the staff as needed.

To provide preventative stress management training on stress and stress related issues to UN staff.

To advance the activities of the Critical Incident Stress Intervention Cells (CISCS), including the organization of the peer helper training workshops, Phase II for a selected group of UN staff (jointly with the UNDSS CISMU) and follow up on their activities.

To promote, plan and implement welfare activities for UN staff in the country;

To identify, address and follow up on critical incident stress cases among the UN staff in the country.

To travel regularly to the UN Offices/Sub-Offices in the country in order to implement preventative and mitigating stress management activities.

To conduct missions to other countries in the region in case of need.

To liaise with local experts and institutions in the country for referral, as well as with UN managers, medical doctors, and local physicians in order to build a network of professionals ready to support and intervene in case of need.

To advise the UN management on stress mitigating strategies, decisions and activities.

To provide monthly reports to the Chief Security Adviser with a copy to the UNDSS CISMU on all activities.
