To ensure that earthquake affected populations have access to rights and services in their community

Objective of Protection Assistant:  To assist the Interagency Protection Assistant (IPO) to ensure overall coordination and provide the necessary links between relevant stakeholders on issues pertaining to access to rights and services and to support local government’s capacity-building programs.

Responsibilities:  The Protection Assistant will report to the Interagency Protection Officer under the overall supervision of the RC:

Provide support and input to IPO on issues relating IDPs access to rights and services in all areas. This will include identifying key issues and challenges for access to rights and services; assisting in the development of a community outreach programme that involves monitoring access to rights and services; and assisting in the coordination and implementation of activities to address these challenges.
Assist in information campaigns, as necessary, to ensure that populations are regularly informed of government policies that impact their rights.
With direction from IPO, liaise and cooperate with relevant stakeholders, including UN agencies, INGOs, local NGOs at the local and provincial level on all protection-related issues.
Assist with the workings of protection cell together with District Relief Units and Camp Management Officers capacity-building staff to ensure a strong referral system for earthquake-affected populations.
Identify gaps and needs of the provincial authorities to build a strong local government capacity to address protection issues.
Assist IPO in planning a weekly (or bi-monthly) meeting on protection to ensure a consistent exchange of information and strong participation and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Provide input for reports and databases on substantive issues related to access to rights and services.
Report to the IPO daily, and through regular reports which include protection concerns, trends and responses.
Assist in coordination and planning of meetings and trainings (eg booking venues, issuing invitations and monitoring attendance).
Coordinate transport needs for all staff and supervise use and maintenance of vehicles.
Assist IPO in assigning projects and tasks of Protection Monitors.
Perform administrative duties as required (such as arranging security clearances for camps and surrounding regions, ID documents for staff, leave arrangements, purchasing and other human resource issues).
Assist IPO with other duties as required, and perform higher duties when needed.
