Experience:

At least 3 years working in a public information and/or media field, with excellent written and spoken skills in English and Urdu. Knowledge of other major languages of Pakistan, especially from the earthquake-affected areas, would be much desired.

Description:
 

DURATION:  Six months: January to end of June 2006

DESCRIPTION:

The OCHA National Public Information Officer for Pakistan will be responsible for improving information flow through the United Nations Country Teams and wider humanitarian community to support informed decision-making, coordination and timely processing of information.

The National PIO will also be the focal point for media and public relations to ensure that key humanitarian challenges are widely highlighted, and will provide additional support in humanitarian coordination as needed.

The Public Information Officer will:

Serve as spokesperson for the RC/HC and OCHA, as required.

Perform in-country media outreach, providing media information that emphasizes key humanitarian challenges and the response of the United Nations system.

Coordinate with information focal points of the UN and humanitarian agencies in Pakistan to ensure that a unified message is being delivered.

Provide information and advice on humanitarian issues; organize and participate in humanitarian briefings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners on humanitarian and emergency relief-related matters.

Provide written field reports on key issues for both decision-making and public information purposes.

Assist in documenting the emergency and its relief through other media as required.

Provide other support to humanitarian coordination as requested by RC/HC and Deputy HC.
