Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in handling GIS and RS assignments
Strong GIS & RS skills with complete command on two or more GIS packages like Arc GIS, Spatial Analyst, 3D-Analyst, Map Objects, and ERDAS Imagine Professional.
Basic understanding of Information System Management.
Hands-on experience in data input, storage, management, analysis, transformation, and producing output and presentations.
Should have ability in taking initiatives, analytical thinking, & problem solving
Excellent communication skills in verbal and written English

Description:
 

Brief Project Description

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) is implementing a PDF-B project “Sustainable Land Management to Combat Desertification in Pakistan” funded by GEF-UNDP. The project aims to layout the groundwork and coordination mechanism for a full-scale GEF project to combat land degradation and desertification in Pakistan in order to protect and restore degraded ecosystem and essential ecosystem services that are key to sustainable management of land resources and reducing poverty from the country.

Position Profile:

The MoE intends to recruit a GIS Analyst/Coordinator SLM Information System who will be responsible for establishing a Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Information System, including database on the extent of land degradation and desertification, mapping of socio-economic data, establishing baselines and GIS based land use planning at the pilot project sites. He will assist the Project Preparation Unit (PPU) preparation of maps, technical reports, and provide input in preparation/revisions of the full-scale Project Document.

Duties and Responsibilities:

GIS Analyst/Coordinator SLM Information System will work under the direction and direct supervision of the Project Manager (PM)/Team Leader, Sustainable Land Management Project (SLMP).

He/She will be responsible for the following specific tasks and responsibilities:

Prepare a background paper on role of GIS and RS in land use planning and their implication to SLM·

Establish GIS based SLM Information System for the project with spatial and numeric database (RDBMS)

Develop thematic maps and land cover database for creating land use maps

Undertake analysis of environmental and socio-economic data generated through resource need assessment and socio-economic surveys at the pilot project sites

Establish baseline and develop site specific land use maps of the pilot project sites

Establish networking and maintain links with other organizations working on GIS based data management including PFI, WWF-Pakistan, SUPARCO, Government Agencies, Research Institutions and Universities as well as private sector organizations

Provide technical input in preparation of project documents, including project brief, technical reports, and quarterly & progress reports of the project.

Assist the sectoral experts/consultants in producing quality outputs.

Procure, set-up, and maintain GIS equipment including software and hardware required for the land use planning and SLM Information system.

Assist PM/Team Leader in executing technical tasks including commenting on technical reports and revision of full-scale Project document.

Oversee development and maintenance of project website and discussion forum (server list)

Supervise technical staff assigned to the GIS Unit under the project

Any other specific task as may be assigned by the National Project Director or Project Manager/Team Leader.
