Three to five years of relevant experience in the information technology field.


Under the supervision of the HIC Manager in Islamabad, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: 

Desktop Administration and Configuration

Assist in monitoring personal computers running the UN software delivery system to ensure that software distributions are being delivered correctly.

Assist in performing software distribution updates, scripting, testing and support.

Perform research into new versions of centrally supported software and perform beta testing, production rollout and post production support.

Perform 2nd level desktop troubleshooting in conjunction with the Help Desk.

Maintain and update files (electronic and paper) and internal databases.

Perform other related duties as required.

Server Operations and Administration

Assist in routine installation, configuration, testing and deployment of server hardware and software, including Local Area Network, Operating Systems, Electronic mail, Unix, Linux, Lotus Notes, Citrix, Database systems, Internet Web software, firewall, Domain Name Server (DNS), DHCP, mail relay, and various security software.

Assist in routine administration, operation, technical support, and monitoring of server systems.

Undertake routine troubleshooting of server systems. If the problem persists, escalate to higher level in accordance with procedures.

Perform routine 24x7 operations of assigned systems.

Assist in responding to requests from user offices and assist in deploying/configuring systems so as to conform to infrastructure standards

Implement backups of servers following standard backup procedures.

Collect various statistics on the performance and reliability of server systems, and produce pertinent reports.

Maintain the documentation of server systems, pertinent to operations and system administration.

Perform other related duties as required.

 Service Installation and Support

Receive and log problem calls or service requests in the automated tracking system with minimum delay;

Attempt to resolve as many problem calls or service requests on initial contact;

Perform tasks related to scheduled service requests, including equipment replacement, equipment installation/de-installation, software installation, LAN connection, returns to stock, site surveys, etc.;

Diagnose and resolve any hardware, software, or connectivity problem with minimum delay;

Provide basic training to end-users on the use of standard systems;

Log all actions in the automated tracking system, including site survey information, steps taken to resolve problem or to complete task, problems encountered, current status, etc.

Escalate problems to the appropriate parties in accordance with established procedure;

Detect problem patterns and recommend solutions;

Keep abreast of developments in technology both in the UN and in the industry in general;

Perform other related duties as required.

Procurement and Logistics

Receive, unpack, and inspect all incoming assets;

Enter assets and asset transactions into the automated inventory management system in accordance with established procedure;

Obey and enforce all security procedures;

For stock purchases under $1000, solicit multiple bids from various vendors;

Troubleshoot, clean, and repair/rebuild equipment;

Perform hardware and software configuration in accordance with established procedure;

Sort, compile, and store equipment in accordance with work orders and/or equipment condition;

Monitor inventory levels and alert supervisor when low thresholds are reached;

Keep abreast of developments in technology in the UN and in the industry in general;

Recommend acquisition of hardware, software, devices, tools, etc. to facilitate work;

Perform other duties as required.

Service Coordination

Receive and log service requests in the automated request management system;

Create and assign work orders in accordance with established procedure;

Liaise with other areas of ITSD to facilitate completion of service requests;

Provide advice to clients regarding ITSD standards and workflow processes;

Perform quality assurance procedures to ensure client satisfaction;

Escalate problems encountered to the supervisor;

Perform filing and record-keeping tasks for the unit;

Keep abreast of latest ITSD standards and technology;

Perform other duties as required.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following: 

Information Technology Officers, Information Systems Officers, Telecommunications Officers and Assistants throughout the United Nations Headquarters, Offices away from Headquarters (OAHs), and Peacekeeping Missions.

Senior officers, technical staff, and end-users in user offices, as well as staff of the Permanent Missions.

Sales and technical personnel of hardware/software vendors and contractors.

Results Expected:

Provision of effective information technology support to IT staff and users in installation, operation, maintenance, and service delivery of hardware and software.
